Solar Panel Installation and Quotes Across the UK

Solar Panels UK is an MCS-certified installer of solar panel systems for homes in Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham and London, and matches homeowners elsewhere in the UK with up to three local MCS-certified installers. Installations start from £3,999, including all solar panels and full electrical installation. A 4kWp solar panel system on a south-facing UK roof generates around 3,400 kWh a year, more than Ofgem's typical domestic usage figure of 2,700 kWh. Residential solar panels and batteries carry 0% VAT until 31 March 2027. Enter your postcode to request your quote.

How Much Electricity Do Solar Panels Generate in the UK?

A UK solar panel system generates between 750 and 1,000 kWh per kWp each year. Southern England sits at the top of that range and northern Scotland at the bottom, so the same 4kWp system produces up to 1,000 kWh more in Cornwall than in Inverness.

Estimated annual solar panel generation by UK region, south-facing roof at 30–40° pitch
Region Generation per kWp per year 4kWp system per year
South West England 950–1,000 kWh 3,800–4,000 kWh
London and South East 900–950 kWh 3,600–3,800 kWh
Midlands and Wales 850–900 kWh 3,400–3,600 kWh
Northern England 800–850 kWh 3,200–3,400 kWh
Central Scotland 780–820 kWh 3,100–3,300 kWh
Northern Scotland 750–780 kWh 3,000–3,100 kWh

East–west roofs are often written off, yet an east–west split array on a 30° pitch produces roughly 80–85% of a south-facing array's output. It also spreads generation into the morning and early evening, when most households use more electricity.

Solar Panel Installation From Survey to Switch-On

A solar panel installation in the UK takes 1 to 2 days on the roof, and the full timeline depends on the survey and any network approval.

  1. Remote design (1–2 working days): satellite roof measurement and a review of your last 12 months of bills.
  2. Home survey (about 60 minutes): roof structure, loft access, consumer unit and inverter location checked.
  3. Network operator notification: systems up to 3.68kW per phase use a G98 notification after commissioning; larger systems need G99 approval before installation, which commonly adds 4–8 weeks.
  4. Installation (1–2 days): scaffolding, roof mounting, panels, inverter, isolators and generation meter fitted.
  5. Handover: MCS certificate, electrical certificate and Smart Export Guarantee application issued.

Solar Battery Storage

A solar battery stores daytime surplus electricity for use in the evening. Without a battery, a typical household uses 30–50% of its own solar generation; adding a 5–10kWh battery raises that share to 60–80%.

VAT, Grants and the Smart Export Guarantee

Three schemes cut the cost of solar panels for UK homeowners: the 0% VAT rate, the Smart Export Guarantee and means-tested grants.

Solar panel incentives available to UK homeowners
Scheme What it provides Who qualifies
0% VAT on energy-saving materials No VAT on panels, batteries and installation until 31 March 2027 All residential installations
Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) Payment per kWh exported to the grid, rate set by each supplier MCS-certified systems with an export-capable smart meter
Warm Homes: Local Grant (England) Funded solar panels and insulation through local councils Criteria set by each council, so check current terms with yours
